In my prior post I provided a link and password to Altea's PhotoBucket album. The password has been changed. So if you are interested in seeing some story pictures about her and her life, you may view them at this link using the new guest password, 'bonalario'

Since I wrote last to this discussion I've received Altea, and more information on her breeding. Her registration papers say she is half Andalusian and one quarter Arabian, with the other quarter not named.

No QH at all as far as I can tell.

I'm told by the previous owner that he was told that quarter was "spanish bred," which if I'm not mistake is what the Andalusian is called in Spain: simple The Spanish Horse.

I suspect a bit of equine hanky panky with probably Atlea's grandmother canoodling with a young as yet unregistered colt out in the pastures. People are often leaving colts too long with the mares instead of either gelding or isolating with other colts and or geldings.

Of the record that would make her three quarters Andalusian.

Her son would probably be 7/8s Andalusian and he certainly looks it. I've uploaded a couple of pictures of him to my photos folder as a 2 year old. Looks typy to me. You tell me what you think.

We have a number of Andalusian standing in my part of the country so if we bred Altea again, or she has a filly this time around we'll like breed her to the best we can find in the area. (Or best we can afford).

I"m just dying to name a gorgeous and elegant filly "Raggety Ann," colt of the same caliber, "Raggety Andy."

I've always favored the satirical pun.

Are there other Andalusian owners at Horse and Pony Friends?
Love to compare notes.

I am very familiar with many breeds of horse, QH, TB, Morgan, Am. Saddlebred, Appy's, and Arabians. The Andalusian though, I am ignorant of, yet it's time to learn, since I will be acquiring one (that's her eye you see watching you, and me) in late June. A 12 yo mare cross bred. Half Andalusian, the other half Arabian and I believe QH. One quarter each.

I've done some research on line and see there is a rich repository of information. I'm most impressed by Andalusians being what I think of as a 'foundation breed,' for the light horse, and for that matter, some contribution to some of the heavy breeds as well.

I am quite taken with having a horse, that like the Arabian, was bred too with an eye for being most compatible with humans.

I doubt I'll ride this mare much if at all, as she is a laminitis founder victim and needs some more recovery time. But we are contemplating breeding her to an Andalusian. She has one foal, a colt, by an Andalusian, and he's a handsome lad.

So I'll be following this group closely.

I understand that Andalusians are slower maturing than other breeds. And long lived. What can you share with me and the group about that, anyone.

Best, Donald Redux

PS Some pics of Althea, her get, and things going on in my life about her right now are at:

Your guest password with be 'haumea,' and yes it is case sensitive. If you click on my other albums you can begin to put a picture together in your mind of who I am and what I've been up to in the horseworld so very many years ago. DR

I would love to chat about the amazing Andalusian! They are one of the most beautiful of the horse breeds. I am considering breeding my Arabian mare to one! If you would like to schedule an Andalusian chat let me know by comment or send me a message. Thanks! Hope you are having a great day!
