It's good therapy to be out in the saddle I bet. Just you, your horse and nature. Do you have a pretty place to ride?

LOL, this is too cute!

I see you still have fall colors there. In Illinois there are no leaves left on our trees. With the weather there you will probably have some extra riding time.

She is such a beautiful horse! Glad to hear you had a great ride today. I had to get hay stacked this afternoon and missed my ride time. Better get some riding in tomorrow if I can.

Back in the Saddle

So after months of just grabbing a quick barebacck ride before it gets dark (my new job keeps me very busy), I finally got a chance to try the saddle JoAnn bought for Stella last summer. The saddle fit both of us pretty well. I need to get back into good form -- I have a tendency to slouch when I'm focusing on other things which puts Stella on the forehand (kind of like drive with the parking brake on). The more I ride, the less frequently I do that, though. Still, It's nice to be able to walk o… Continue

Busy Busy Busy -- sorry about not being online in a while

Well, much has happened since I last logged on. FIrst, I forgot my password -- then I started grad school. My wife had a family issue (both her parents were in the hospital, one right after the other -- gladly they are both well.

The big news is that we are moving south. Alabama bound for my next job. We've located a suitable property and will be taking our horses with us. Lots of planning to undertake so this will go smoothly for them.

Today JoAnn and I gave Stella a good trimming on her fron… Continue

Winter fun - watching my girls at play

Catching up a little -- this past week was "winter break" for my daughter's school -- an entire week off to enjoy the winter sports up here. Last Sunday afternoon Jo and I were trimming Allie's hooves and Indi came out to work with the horses -- specifically Stella. Stella and Indi have been pretty good with each other, and Indi has been able to develop a working bond with Stella. With Stella being as big as she is, this is a good thing -- but we still don't let Indi go unsupervised around the h… Continue

The Greeting

As some of you may know either from reading my page comments or through chat, I've been away from my horse for half a year. I finally got home last week, a few days earlier than planned which was a big surprise for my daughter. JoAnn was prepped with the video camera and caught the moment and the walk to the paddock. Stella did what could best be described as a double-take. She looked at me, looked elsewhere, then whipped around and looked at me again. She walked up to me, dropped her head in my… Continue

Thanks for your thoughts on using the draft crosses for therapy. I do not have any experience with drafts and am going by what I read and hear from people who have them. I would love to hear about your experiences with therapy. I am just beginning the certification process. I have been overwhelmed by the response we have gotten even without any formal training in therapy.

Hey Dave,
Glad to see you stop by! Hope you will keep checking in and let us know how things are going with your new place and getting all settled in. What kind of summer did you have? Hope to see some new pics of you, and your family and of course your beautiful Stella! I have become a bit more curious about the draft horse crosses as possible therapy horses due their disposition and steadiness.

Hi Dave!
Hope all is well with you and your family. Are you getting all settled in? How is Stella adjusting to her new home?

Hello Dave. I missed this comment from September but found it when I was going to respond to your comments about my video. My siter and I had a lot of fun filming it and she did an awesome job of putting it to music and adding the still photographs. Hope your trip has gone well and that you will be home soon and safely. I am currently spending some time with Karen Rohlfs Dressage Naturally bood and DVD set. Have you heard of her and her dressage program? Hope to meet you in chat sometime soon and hear about the Dave and Stella reunion.

Still on my extended trip, but had the opportunity to get on the net and hit the site. I recently was sent a copy of Philippe Karl's new book "Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage." Still reading it -- but the first chapter has some excellent information in it. I also flipped through and looked at some of his diagrams and illustrations. Definitely a must-have book for the bookshelf if you're interested in the development and training of the horse. The translator did make a couple of grammar errors brining the text into English -- but still the translator did a much better job of writing than most college freshmen nowadays. I lay that one at the publisher's feet for failure to edit.

The first chapter covers some of the basic physics and physiology of the horse and the horse under rider. The book contrasts some of the shortcuts used today with gymnastic training of the horse that many of the classicists use. The diagrams are colorful and support the primary text very well.

That's my 2c for now. Hope you're all doing well and getting some nice rides in this season.

Wow, that is a lnog time to be gone. When are you leaving Dave? Or maybe you have left already? Have your wife sign up too and she can keep us up to date on Stella. :)

Sorry I haven't been on in a while... I've been preparing Stella for hand-off to my wife for a few months. They are riding well together and like each other. I'm headed out on a long business trip and will return early next year.

Thank you. I haven't seen any bosals big enough to fit Stella -- but she enjoys her bitless so much I haven't even bothered looking in a long while. I started her out in nothing but a neck ring and chaps then worked up from there.

I will have to check that out Dave. In my Parelli program I ride in a halter mostly and have found I do not have any desire to put the bit back in. All my horses do really great without it. I'd like to check out the bitless bridles and see what they are like as I had thought to get a bosal for when my husband rides one of them. Your Stella is so pretty!

Stella is beautiful, what a mane she has. That is great that you ride her in a bridle with out a bit and cute that she tries to help you put the bridle on.
