Winter? Is it over for you yet?

Here in the Pacific Northwest temperate rain forest it's a bright sunny day.

You would even envy me, some of you, given your weather, until I reveal that it snowed yesterday and last night, and froze up solid here.

It's been a straight diet of cold rain here with intermittent snow, and more rain and cold. Mud everywhere unless it freezes into hard ridges, then back to mud.

I confess I'm not exercising my two girls enough, though they do like to play together when I put them in their turnout paddock.

My garden?

Waiting for the tiller.

I have a feeling this will be a good year though. I'll have my horse trailer serviceable in a few weeks and can truck on out to the local barn with riding hall (where I teach) when it rains.

The mountains around me are snow topped mostly, and I'll go up for a trail ride and a walkies for Bonnie.

Altea's hooves have recovered from laminitis likely as much as they ever will but she's good on boots and goes anywhere in them. Probably can go to just forehand booted. But we'll see.

Bonnie was two in February, the 22nd. Big for an Andalusian two year old I think. As tall as her mother but not filled out like mom yet. Full of herself, racing about the turnout bucking and kicking and rearing even getting her mom to run with her. Two or three years more until she'll be backed. These Andalusians are slow to mature.

Finally got my lights up in the barn, both stalls and the tack/feed-room and the yard. What a difference 900 watts can make in my work and attitude. I mix my own supplements and now I'll be able to read my little gram scale without so much eyestrain.

Stall cleaning is never fun but it's at least satisfying to know I've gotten it clean now that both stalls are well lite into the corners.

I have two days of sun and fairly dry weather to catch up with my garden work, and maybe, must maybe, take the girls for a walk up the road to the mountain trail. We'll see.

Hello Donald,

Glad to hear you braved the winter and are finally coming out on the other side. We are a bit luckier in the Spring weather department. We have started in the garden with onions, potatos and strawberry plants. Next week for cabbage plants, broccoli and maybe try our green beans and corn. Think I will wait a bit on tomatos and peppers. Just get the plants and keep at home in the garage south window for a little while. Nights can be quite cold yet. Horses are all good here and have added two yearling calves to the menagerie here. Plan on getting more done with the minis and hope to do some riding this year!
