Hi Peggy, just want to thank you for your cd. I have been following the steps and sparky is enjoying him self, he picks things up really fast, he is a smart wee man and its great fun. Do you have the clicker with you only when giving him a lesson?
Had a fun chance to "proof" my cues today. Every once in a while I sit on a barrel and give McKee verbal cues and see if he really understands the difference between my physical cues and verbal cues. It's a fun way to test what he knows.
For example, I'm sitting on the barrel and say "walk on." I don't care where he walks, I just want to know that he's responding to the verbal cue. If he does, I click. Then I move on to "back" or "circle" or "spin" or even backing in circles around the barrel.
At one point he was facing the barrel and I said "walk-on." He had to think it through, because if he walked forward, he'd have to climb the barrel. In this case he just took a step towards it, and sort of put his head by my lap LOL. So I asked again and he had to step out away and walk elsewhere.
To me this is a fantastic example of how horses can think and generalize. He KNOWS that "walk-on" means move forward....but we haven't learned right or left...so he tried his best to figure out where to go.
Anyway, I love this stuff....watching animals learn. Just wanted to share it.

How interesting that you live in Carpinteria. I used to live there too! We lived on Foothill Rd. between the high school and the polo field. I miss it terribly at times, the weather, the ocean, the horse activity and occasional trips into the Santa Ynez valley.
I don't have one that's specific to Halter, but on my site is the video of beginning halter training for Mantra. If you want that one, I'll be glad to email some of the steps that will take you towards your goal.
I am hoping we can work out the chat Peggy. I am interested in learning something about clicker training and hoped you might have a DVD to help teach halter training via clicker. I would like to show my mini but do not like conventional training methods for that. I will go surf around your website to see what you might have for informational DVDS and books etc. Thanks!
I'm going to be out of town until next Monday. After that, almost any evening after 6:30 PST would be good for me if we set it up ahead of time. I don't know how the time zone effects people who would sign up. Maybe we could get a group for the earlier times zones and another for the later ones.
I'd like to be able to do a Q&A (maybe 45 min. max) for starters...if we could do it online and chat style that would be fun.
I'm not familiar enough yet with .ning to know if we can set up a chat. Should be fun! Looking forward to it.
I'm still trying to figure out a time for us to all get together in chat. I have been working later evenings and want to find a day I could attend as well. :) Do you have a time that works for you or are you pretty open on it?
Do you know of any people that might be interested in joining for your clicker session? So far I know of at least 4 members. The main thing is getting them together at the same time. I can send out a broadcast to all members when we pin down a date. :)
